Green Button Connect
energycap · Connect My Data
energycap is a personal, single-household energy monitoring application. It uses Green Button Connect My Data to retrieve the operator's own utility-metered electricity usage so it can be compared against measurements taken from equipment in the same home.
What is requested
- Interval electricity usage for the operator's own account — the usage point, its reading metadata, and the interval readings themselves.
- A daily subscription, so newly published readings arrive without anyone re-authorizing.
- Historical usage for the account, to establish a baseline.
Nothing else is requested. No billing payment details, no account credentials, and no data belonging to any other account.
Authorizing access
- You will need a My Meter local account with the utility. Requesting one requires emailing the utility for a registration code, and the local account's email address must be different from the primary email on your utility My Account login.
- Begin the authorization from your utility's My Meter site, choosing energycap as the third party and selecting what to share.
- The utility returns you to
/greenbutton/callbackon this site, which hands the authorization to the collector running on your own machine. That page transmits nothing to this site or to anyone else — it is a static page.
Revoking access
Access can be withdrawn at any time from the My Meter site, in the section listing the third parties you are sharing data with. Revoking stops all further sharing immediately. It does not delete readings already retrieved into the operator's own archive.
What happens to the data
It is stored privately, used only for the operator's own analysis of their own home, and never sold, published, shared, or aggregated with anyone else's data. The privacy policy is the full statement, and the code that handles it is public.
